Montelukast is used to treat asthma. When taken regularly, Montelukast helps to prevent the chest tightness, wheezing and breathlessness that is common in asthma. It may also be used to prevent breathlessness that is triggered by exercise or physical exertion. Montelukast is meant to be taken long-term. It is not meant for fast relief during acute asthma attacks.

Prescription Montelukast Drug Information

Take Montelukast exactly as directed. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor. Montelukast must be taken regularly for it to work well. Do not stop taking it unless instructed by your doctor. Your condition may worsen if the medicine is stopped suddenly. Montelukast cannot relieve an acute asthma attack. You should continue to keep your "rescue" inhaler by your side at all times. You may take Montelukast with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. It is best taken in the evening. If you are taking it to prevent asthma that is triggered by exercise, you should take Montelukast at least 2 hours before exercise, but do not take more than once a day. You should continue to keep your "rescue" inhaler by your side at all times.
